Apple CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday announced two new iPhones during an official event at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California – Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – Both iPhone models have larger displays. Apple also introduced the Apple Watch, the company first wearable device.
The company’s first smartphone with a larger display, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080p 16:9 display giving it a pixel density of 401ppi with over 2-million pixels. It has the landscape mode, a new feature for the homescreen to improve graphics speeds by a factor of 84. The iPhone 6 Plus comes with an aluminium unibody design and metal strips on the sides for the antennas. Measures of the device are 158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1mm and weighs in at just 172 grams.
Under the hood, the new iPhone 6 Plus packs a new Apple A8 64-bit chip based on 20-nm processor and has 2-Billion transistors. The A8 chip is 13% smaller than the A7 and 50 times faster than the iPhone 5S. It also has M8 motion co-processor and a Barometer for fitness apps. It will be coming pre-installed with the iOS 8 operating system. The powerful battery of the handset claimed to provide up-to 24 hours of 3G talk time and up-to 634 hours of standby time.
It sports an 8-megapixel iSight camera with an improved sensor, aperture of f/2.2 and a 1.5 micron pixel sensor and an upgraded True Tone flash for more realistic lighting. The autofocus camera has OIS (Optical image stabilization) which is not available in the iPhone 6.
The rear camera has cinematic video stabilization for videos, and is capable of shooting video in 1080p @ 30fps or 60fps, Slo-Mo @ 120fps or 240fps, and the camera can capture panoramas up-to 43-megapixels. The front of the handset sports an updated 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera for selfies with a new BSI Sensor, aperture of f/2.2 and 720p HD video recording.
Apple has said that the iPhone 6 will support 20 LTE bands that works with more than 200 4G-LTE carriers worldwide. The iPhone 6 Plus will support 150 Mbps LTE, VoLTE, a new WiFi calling feature, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac. Apple also introduced Apple Pay to allow customers to pay with one tap from supported e-commerce portals.
The built in NFC feature combines with the Touch ID on the home button for the new mobile payment system, Apple Pay that works by holding the handset up-to a generic card reader and pressing the Touch ID button. The Apple Pay will work with the American Express, MasterCard and Visa and the service will be available in the U.S. in October 2014.
In terms of pricing, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus will cost $299 for the 16GB variant, $399 for the 32GB variant and $499 for the 128GB variant with a two year contract. It will come in Gold, Space Gray and Silver. Apple has announced the availability for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, the handsets become available for pre-order on 12th September. The iPhones will go sale on September 19th in the US, UK, Australia, France, Japan, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Germany. It would be available across 115 countries worldwide by the end of the year.
