It’s been nearly 3 weeks since Asus have released their mid range phone ZenFones in Indian market through Flipkart. Somehow we managed to get hands on an Asus Zenfone 5 A501CG. The model we are going to review is a white colored 8GB model. We couldn’t get black one as it went out of stock within weeks of release.

In this article we are going to discuss about the new sophisticated and powerful smartphone under 10000 i.e Zenfone 5.

Asus Zenfone 5 A501CG Review

  • 8 MP camera with LED flash, 2 MP front facing camera,
  • 1080p @ 30 fps video recording,
  • 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor and PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU,

  • Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, upgradable to Android 4.4, KitKat,
  • Dual SIM, dual stand by,
  • Li-Po 2110 mAh battery, talk time up to 18 hours in 3G network.

Disadvantages:

  • Very tall as compared to display size,
  • The headset is not has good build quality however performs well,
  • Takes too much time to charge up to 100%,
  • Minor lags in games.

Design And Build Quality:

The phone dimension measures 148.2 x 72.8 x10.3, The edge thickness is 5.5mm and the thickest part is 10.3mm.

The phone has candy bar type design. However the metal bezel in lower end makes it look like HTC One. It has sturdy build quality and the back panel has matte finish. The back panel has curved design which fits well in the hand but bigger size of the phone makes it difficult to operate using one hand. Overall the build quality is good and may pass 1 meter drop test.

User Interface:

Asus has done a lot customization here. The UI fully skinned with Zen UI and looks pretty. However the launcher is in HTC style.

Asus zenfone 5 UI

The main feature of this UI is notification bar. If you pull down it from left side it show notifications and if you pull it down from right side it will show tiles. Tiles have Torch, RAM booster, Calculator and Quick memo for faster access without opening app drawer.

Asus is using custom keyboard. It has swipe feature as well but I would recommend to install SwiftKey. SwiftKey is free and has regional language and better text prediction feature, also you can install various themes.

Asus custom keyboard

Zen UI looks very appealing. However if you don’t like it, there are plenty of launcher available for download from Play Store.

Camera :

The camera manages to do well. The 8MP camera captures good picture. There is image stabilization feature which is usable only for 6MP size photos. It records full HD 1080p videos and HD 720p with video stabilization. The front camera is also good. It has 2MP front facing camera. Asus has added many features in camera app.

Performance:

Asus has done great job by introducing a high performance phone in upper entry level price range. The phone has dual core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2560 processor and PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU. This combination manages to score more than Moto G. Multitasking and app switching is really fast as it has 2GB RAM. However you will experience very minor lags while playing games like Smash It and Subway Surf.

It manages to score more than 19000 in AnTuTu Benchmark which is really a good thing.

Asus zenfone 5 battery & Performance

Battery:

The Asus Zenfone 5 A501CG has Non-removable Li-Po 2110 mAh battery. The battery manages to power up the phone through out the day. Company claims that it has 18 Hrs of 3G talk time. The phone is new and it is under test right now so we can not comment on battery performance.

However it takes 5-6 Hrs for getting fully charged which is really very annoying. Asus also offers power management tool. The tool is very useful and users don’t need to install any third party app.

Final words:

Asus Zenfone 5 A501CG is a really steal for the deal. It gives best performance and best hardware quality in the class. Also, it has many pre-installed apps like RAM booster, Power management tool, personal management tool (like Do It Later and What’s Next). There are plenty of other pre-installed apps which are really fun to use like PC Link (to share display using USB cable) and Mirror app.

The custom ZenUI provides many features like Reading Mode and Splendid app which is used to change display color temperatures like those in Lumia phones. It has best camera quality in the class (in Android OS) and plenty of features. So if you are going to buy a new phone in ₹10,000 range than I would recommend you this phone. Now its price is 8499 on Flipkart.
